Bible Doxologies

As women of God, how do we praise God? In a time when praising God, especially in the worship service has taken on many forms, how do we know what truly pleases God? In this study on Bible Doxologies, we will look at actual doxologies in the Bible and seek to apply them to our own lives with the goal of seeking to praise God in a manner which is consistent with His Word.

A doxology (from the Greek: doxa, glory + logos, word or speaking) is an expression of praise or glory to God.

Holman Bible Dictionary: Doxologies generally contain two elements, an ascription of praise to God (usually referred to in third person) and an expression of His infinite nature.

The doxology from Exodus 15:18 is easier to understand in context (Exodus 15:11-18); the writer has asked the questions in verse 11: Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Examples to support the questions are given in verses 12-13:

12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

How do the people respond to this God? (verses 14-16)

14 The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestine.

15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

16 Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

What is meant by the phrase, "till thy people pass over . . . which thou hast purchased"? (verse 17)

17 Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O LORD, which thy hands have established.

The writer is speaking here of the passing over of the Israelites through the land of the Edomites and Moabites into the Promised Land. There is, of course, a double meaning. God has purchased a people for Himself through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ; those people (all Christians from the beginning of time to the end of time) will dwell with the Lord in the Sanctuary of God.

Now, read the doxology again.

The Lord shall reign forever and ever.
Exodus 15:18

The Lord will reign, indeed does already reign, and will do so forever and ever! Even today in this, the 21st century, the Lord reigns in our hearts and lives.

Take that thought with you throughout this day.
