1 Peter Doxology. Some of the richest verses in the Bible are those found directly preceding a doxology. That is certainly the case in 1 Peter 5.

1 Peter Doxology
1 Peter 5

Some of the richest verses in the Bible are those found directly preceding a doxology. That is certainly the case in 1 Peter 5. Look at verses 8 through 10 from the NIV.

8 Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

Peter gives us a warning in verse 8. Be alert and of sober mind. That warning is just as applicable today as it was when Peter penned it. We may forget that there is a spiritual battle raging all around us, but the devil never forgets. What an easy prey we Christians have become for him in this 21st century. What thoughts are uppermost in our minds today? Which tie should I wear? I need new shoes! I had better get that raise today!

We have become shallow Christians more consumed with the world around us than taking the warning from Peter seriously. Do we wonder that God allows suffering in our lives? How quickly we get our priorities in order when everything starts to fall apart all around us!

But, our God who is rich in mercy tempers that suffering. Peter reminds us that our God will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. Ponder that as you go about your activities of this day!

What an amazing God we serve. He tempers our lives so that we do not become overly consumed by the things of this world. God grants to us a purpose so much greater than anything the world can offer. By the grace of God, let us lift our hearts and minds to the Lord Jesus Christ, who saved us, keeps us, and will safely bring us home to His kingdom to live with Him forever!

To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
