A Bible Devotion from Psalm 99
The Lord Our God Is Holy!
1 The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He dwells between the cherubim; let the earth be moved! 2 The LORD is great in Zion, and He is high above all the peoples. 3 Let them praise Your great and awesome name--He is holy.
4 The King's strength also loves justice; You have established equity; You have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool--He is holy.
6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests, and Samuel was among those who called upon His name; they called upon the LORD, and He answered them. 7 He spoke to them in the cloudy pillar; they kept His testimonies and the ordinance He gave them.
8 You answered them, O LORD our God; You were to them God-Who-Forgives, though You took vengeance on their deeds. 9 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.
Psalm 99, NKJV
What does it mean that God is holy? The 1st stanza of the 99th Psalm, which was written as a song, (verses 1 to 3) tells us that the Lord reigns, He dwells between the cherubim, and He is high above all the peoples. In the second stanza (verses 4 and 5) we find that the King loves justice, he has established equity, and He has executed justice.
Stanza 3 (verses 6 and 7) recount God's faithfulness to Moses, Aaron, and Samuel. They called upon Him and He answered them. Therefore we know that when we call upon Him, He will answer us. Stanza 4 (verses 8 and 9) returns to the theme of God's holiness. He is to us the God-who-forgives.
So, again, what does it mean that God is holy? When you read this Psalm you are faced with the clear evidences of what that holiness means. In the face of this holiness, we can do nothing but exalt the Lord our God.
When thinking about this psalm, pray today that you will think of the holiness of God and what it means to you, causing you to exalt the Lord our God.
