A Bible Devotion from Psalm 87
The Lamb's Book of Life
1 His foundation is in the holy mountains. 2 The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwellings of Jacob. 3 Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God! 4 I will make mention of Rahab and Babylon to those who know Me; behold, O Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia: ˜This one was born there. 5 And of Zion it will be said, This one and that one were born in her; and the Most High Himself shall establish her. 6 The LORD will record, when He registers the peoples: This one was born there. 7 Both the singers and the players on instruments say, All my springs are in you.
Psalm 87, NKJV
This Psalm is a very interesting song praising the city of Zion. Zion here is represented as the birthplace of all true believers. As such, the Lord loves the gates of Zion. As a matter of fact, people from Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Ethiopia who become believers are said to have been born in Zion.
We are then told that the Lord keeps a register of all of the people born in Zion. Isn't that a remarkable thing? When you become a Christian God records your name in His register in Zion. God knows His true saints and never forgets who they are. Later in the Bible we are told that our names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life, which is another name for this register. All those whose names are written in the Lamb's (Christ) Book of Life will be admitted into the kingdom of heaven.
Let us join with the people in the 87th Psalm and praise God for the glorious city of Zion where our names are written down. Once our names are there, no one can remove them; Satan can never pull our names out of God's Book of Life.
Pray today that you will go about this day remembering that as a Christian your name is recorded in God's register in the city of Zion. If your name is not there, pray today that the Lord Jesus Christ would save you from your sins and make you a true believer.
