Christ Gives Light

Christ Gives Light. Paul exhorts us to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but we live in a world that is consumed by darkness!

11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says:

“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”

Ephesians 5:11-14, NKJV

Christ Gives Light

We continue the thought begun in our last devotion where we were challenged to walk as children of light. The question comes to mind, though, just how do we do that? Paul exhorts us to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but we live in a world that is consumed by darkness! As a matter of fact, in our culture, darkness is treated as light, and light is treated as darkness.

We should not be surprised by the attitudes of our culture. Spiritually, we must remember, that they are dead! Paul even quotes Christ by saying, "Arise from the dead!" How does a dead man arise? By the fact that he is dead, does that not mean that he does not even have the ability to arise? What, then, can he do?

Christ gives light!

Paul answers these questions by saying, "And Christ will give you light."

There is the answer! Light is a gift from Christ. Unless Christ gives us light, we will continue to walk in darkness.  As we think on these things, we must consider the glorious expansion of these truths given to us in 2 Corinthians 4:3-6. Here it is in the New King James Version:

3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

How did man become so blind so that he lives in darkness? The minds of men have been blinded by the god of this age (Satan). How do we circumvent that darkness? We do not preach about ourselves. Rather, we preach Christ Jesus the Lord. Why? God commanded light to shine out of darkness; it is He who has shone that light in our hearts. It is He who gives the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

We always come back to the same truth, do we not? Everything we need for eternal life is found in Christ. In Christ we find truth, in Christ we find the way to that truth, and in Christ we have been brought out of the blindness of eternal darkness into His eternal light.

Nothing in this world can give us peace, joy, and happiness, apart from Christ. In Christ we have everything. Without Christ we have nothing! Only Christ gives light!

Go, then, to Christ who gives light, and walk in the light of His truth, joy and peace! These truths are just as relevant in our day as they were in the day of the Apostle Paul!
