Book of Genesis
Genesis 1-3

Book of Genesis, Genesis 1-3. Genesis 1-3 covers the Creation of the World, the Creation of Man and Woman, and the Fall of Man. There are many views of the origin of our world; I am a simple person and a person of faith. Nothing is too hard for God; He spoke and the world was born.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1, ESV

5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
Genesis 2:5-9 & 22, ESV

22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever—” 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which he was taken. 24 He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.
Genesis 3:22-24, ESV

Paradise Gained

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1-3 covers the Creation of the World, the Creation of Man and Woman, and the Fall of Man. There are many views of the origin of our world; I am a simple person and a person of faith. As such, I believe that God, as told in Genesis 1, created the world in 6 days and then rested on the 7th day. Nothing is too hard for God; He spoke and the world was born. I do not want a God who is like me, but one who is perfect, truly kind and just, and who controls everything. Neither do I believe that the earth and all creatures developed by chance. What a scary world that would be!

Paradise Lost

He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed the cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life.

As told in Genesis 1, Adam and Eve were born into a perfect world, a world we simply cannot imagine. However, through the sin of Adam and Eve, sin passed on to every person. Adam and Eve were driven out of the garden of Eden, never to return until God creates the new heavens and the new earth. The corruption of sin also spread to all of life: all plants and animals. This is the world that we know; one that is ravaged by sin, disease, and corruption.

Where, then, is our hope? Already in Genesis 3, God promised a Redeemer who would be the salvation of man. I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

There we have it; in the Book of Genesis, Chapters 1-3, we learn of Paradise Gained and Paradise Lost. That loss is not without hope; though Satan became our chief enemy, Genesis 3:15 promised us that Christ would bruise his head, and send him to eternal damnation in the bottomless pit. Christ became our Redeemer when Satan bruised his heal at the cross of Calvary, where Christ provided a way for us to regain that Paradise that was lost through the sin of Adam and Eve.

How remarkable! What a great God we have! So let us begin each day with the hope of Christ's leading and guiding us until we reach that perfect day when we enter the gates of heaven and so live with God forever!

As we continue our devotionals in the Book of Genesis let us marvel at the wondrous ways that God works among the children of men!
