Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Blessed are the Pure in Heart. Who are the pure in heart? The answer to that question is very closely related to the previous devotion when Christ said, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy." In that devotional, we came to understand that salvation is from Christ, alone. In our sinful natures, each of us stands condemned before a holy and righteous God.

8   Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
       Matthew 5:8, NKJV

Blessed are the Pure in Heart

We learned in our previous devotional that, if we come to Christ, confessing our own sins and receiving His payment (His shed blood) for our sins, He will show mercy to us. To those who have accepted Christ, He now tells us that the pure in heart are blessed.

What exactly does that mean? How can we actually be pure in heart before God? We are pure in heart, before God, because the Holy Spirit has taken up residence in our hearts!

Does that mean that we are better than those who have not come to Christ? No! How can we think of ourselves as being better than anyone else, when the only reason we are now pure in heart is because of the work that Christ has done on our behalf? The truth is, not only were we not able to save ourselves, we are not even able to keep ourselves saved!

While we live on this earth, we will always wrestle with the sins of this world, which can appear to be tempting and glamorous before our very eyes. Through Christ, and the indwelling Holy Spirit, we are now pure in heart. Though we are still tempted by sin, we have an Advocate who guides and strengthens us, and turns our hearts away from the evil that would so easily overcome us.

As believers, we are bought with a price. Let us then, turn our hearts and lives to Him. Let us spend time in His Word and in prayer, for these are the defenses God has given us to keep us pure in Him.

What is the end result for those who are pure in heart? They shall see God! I am reminded of John's Words,

12 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.

1 John 4:12-13, NKJV

Think of it--we shall see God. Only those whose have been perfected by the blood of Christ will ever really get to see God! What an amazing God we serve. He saves us, He lives within us, and one day He will take us home to live with Him forever!

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God!
