17 But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
A Monthly Holiday Devotions Ezine with a 4th of July devotional for the month of July entitled, Independence.
Romans 6:17-18, English Standard Version
What do you think of when you think of independence. My first thought, perhaps because I have children leaving the nest, is that independence (to them) means freedom from the rule of parents and freedom to do whatever they choose.
Is that true? Are they really free? My experience is that the "freedom" I have as an adult is tempered by harsh taskmasters: employers, bill collectors, and even tax collectors. In many ways life with my parents was easier. Of course, I never wanted to go back and live with my parents.
Are we independent spiritually? At first we would say, "yes," but just think about that question for a minute.
Look at the words of Paul in Romans 6 shown above. Christians, who were once slaves to sin are now slaves to righteousness. Did we make a decision to become slaves to sin? No, we were born that way! Only through Christ do we have the opportunity to change our allegiance to the Lord Jesus Christ.
In the US, when we think of Independence Day, we think of the United States winning its independence from England, in 1776. Was that an easy victory, or did it come with a great cost?
How about the many wars of the 20th century; again our freedom was challenged, but God brought victory from the oppressors. Was that an easy victory, or did it come with a great cost?
Now let us think of the freedom we have in Christ. Was that an easy victory, or did it come with a great cost?
As you get ready to celebrate the 4th of July, think about the freedom we have in Christ. We who were once slaves to sin are now slaves to righteousness, serving our dear taskmaster Jesus Christ.
Do we Christians have reason to celebrate Indepence Day? Oh yes! This independence was bought by the blood of our Savior the Lord Jesus Christ.
In the middle of your celbration, take some time out to thank the Lord for the Independence he has granted you.
God Bless You,

My Scriptures business is really growing as well; if you have any inkling at all about doing a successfull internet marketing business--it does not come any easier than this!
The first goal of this company, called
is to spread the Gospel to as many people as possible by putting Bible verses on all of the products they sell. The offer an impressive range of natural vitamins and supplements, as well as hair and body care products, and, of course, Bible study CD's.
The cost, therefore is almost non-existent! Just buy products that you would normally buy, from them instead of elsewhere.
If you want to take the time to find your own downline, through friends, neighbors, and cold calling, go right ahead. (I hate doing all of the above.)
But, if you would rather let them do the work for you, you have the opportunity of joining three different advertising co-ops based upon the amount of money you are willing to invest each month. (It's unbelievably cheap! I know because I have been foolish enough to join companies that cost over $100 a month.)
The advertising is done by a professional advertising company who puts ads in Christian magazines and Christian web sites. As people respond to the ads, the people at
build your downline. Your only responsiblity, then, is to call these people so you can answer their questions and encourage them in their own business.
Now that kind of calling I can do! After all, I love to talk, and these people are ready to listen.
I have found that their predictions are very accurate, my downline is growing. God is so good!SCRIPTURES UPDATE:
Everything this company has said is true; I am getting about the number of people in my downline as they said I would. (It's nice to know someone who actually tried it out before you take the plunge!)
