The Rock
Deuteronomy 32-34

The Rock, Deuteronomy 32-34. As the book of Deuteronomy comes to a close, the obedience and disobedience of the Israelites is recounted in the song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32. God's faithfulness to His people is the theme of the song, and is truly the "secret" of Moses' successful and long life.

4 “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. . . . . 39 “‘See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.
Deuteronomy 32:4 & 39, English Standard Version

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

9 Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge —10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent. 11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.

14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 91:1-2, 9-12, & 14-16, English Standard Version

The Rock
Deuteronomy 32-34

As the book of Deuteronomy comes to a close, the obedience and disobedience of the Israelites is recounted in the song of Moses in Deuteronomy 32. God's faithfulness to His people is the theme of the song, and is truly the "secret" of Moses' successful and long life. Appropriately he gives to God, the Rock, all of the glory, and encourages the people to leave their sin and follow Him completely.

How appropriate it is to follow the closing chapters of Deuteronomy with Psalm 91. Just notice all of the promises God makes to His people for their obedience and faithfulness to Him. This is a Psalm that speaks directly to us today.

Look at the attributes of God listed in the verses shown above.

* His works are perfect; His ways are justice.

* He is just and upright.

* He kills and He makes alive.

* He wounds and He heals.

* There is none who can take His children out of His hands.

* He is a refuge and a fortress.

* He commands His angels to guard His children.

* He delivers and protects His children.

* He answers the prayers of His children and is with them in times of trouble.

* He rescues and honors His children.

* He grants long life and salvation to His children.

I want this God to be my God, don't you? What an amazing God we have! It has been over 40 years since I chose Psalm 91:1 as my life's verse; to this day my heart's desire is to dwell in the secret place of the Most High; in the place of the One who knows my name!

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

Psalm 91:1, King James Version

Truly God is the Rock and our only fortress. In Him, alone, can we rest the very keeping of our souls for all eternity.
