Psalm 112

A Bible Devotion from Psalm 112

Blessed Is the Man Who Fears the Lord

1 Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in His commandments.

2 His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. 5 A good man deals graciously and lends; he will guide his affairs with discretion. 6 Surely he will never be shaken; the righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. 7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is established; he will not be afraid, until he sees his desire upon his enemies.

9 He has dispersed abroad, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be exalted with honor. 10 The wicked will see it and be grieved; he will gnash his teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked shall perish.
Psalm 112, NKJV

What are the characteristics of the true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ? This Psalm is almost entirely dedicated to explaining the true characteristics and hope of the Christian. Look at some of the things mentioned: he fears the Lord, he delights in God's commandments, his descendants will be mighty on earth, he'll have wealth and riches, he is gracious and full of compassion, he guides his affairs with discretion, he will never be shaken, he will not be afraid of evil tidings, his heart steadfastly trusts in the Lord. Wow! Are you impressed? I am too!

God loves to bless His children and grant gifts to them. While it may be true that some of us will not experience our great wealth until we are in heaven, we should still see God develope the other characteristics of the believer in us as we live this life for Him. They may not all be there yet; they may not all be there until we get to heaven, but they are the signs of a true saint.

Read the 112th Psalm again and pray today that God would instill in you all of the characteristics of the true believer in Christ.
