Light in the Lord

Light in the Lord. In this world, we are familiar with the good/bad, the yin/yang, and the darkness/light. Is this what Paul is referring to in Ephesians 5?

8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:8-10, NKJV

Light in the Lord

In this world, we are familiar with the good/bad, the yin/yang, and the darkness/light. Is this what Paul is referring to in Ephesians 5? Do we need a balance between the good and the bad, the yin and the yang, the darkness and the light?

I am always amazed at how close the people of this world come to the truth and yet how far away they remain. Paul is not speaking of some kind of balance in nature. To do so would give credence to the idea that both good and evil are necessary or even equal. While both most certainly do exist in this world, a time will come when time shall be no more; the new heavens and new earth that God creates will not have any darkness. There will only be light in the Lord.

Paul is not saying, balance your life between good and evil. Rather, he is saying, you once walked in unbelief and darkness, not understanding the things of God. Now, since coming to Christ, walk as children of light, for now, you live in the light of the Lord.

What does it mean to walk as children of light? Paul gives a short summary of the fruits of the Spirit when he says, "The fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth." These are the things that are acceptable to the Lord.

In our day of cynicism is it really possible to find truth? Yes! Truth is found in the Word of God. What does the Bible say about truth?

6 And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

7 Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.

Exodus 34:6-7a, KJV

For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord.

Psalm 117:2, KJV

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.

1 John 5:6, KJV

Then he said to me, “These words are faithful and true.”

Revelation 22:6, NKJV

Let us, then, not be deceived by the things of this world and by the culture in which we live. God's Word is true and faithful. In it we will find all of the secrets of this life and life to come. Walk, then, as a children of light!
