John 5

John 5 continues its narrative beginning with a confrontation between Jesus and the Jews when Jesus heals a man at the Pool of Bethesda.

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. . . . I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not . . . How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?

John, Chapter 5: 39, 43, and 44, King James Version

This chapter continues its narrative beginning with a confrontation between the religious Jews of the day and Jesus when the Jews took offense when Jesus heals a man who had been ill for 38 years.

This chapter leaves no doubt as to whom Jesus really is. He rightly chides the religious leaders for, though they searched the Scriptures, they did not understand who Jesus was. Yet passage after passage of the Old Testament Scriptures pointed directly to Jesus. For men of their understanding, it should have been obvious that Jesus was indeed, the Messiah, the Christ: Son of God and Son of Man.

Who is Jesus? The question compels us today, in the 20th century, to do just as Jesus said and search the Scriptures. Jesus said, in John 5:35, "But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me."

Truly, this same Jesus, is the Son of God, our Lord and Savior, who has purchased salvation for a lost mankind, helpless without Him.

Bible Devotions from John 5

Pool of Bethesda - Verses 1-9

For 38 years the man had been lying at the Pool of Bethesda, waiting for someone to put him in the water so he could be healed. John 5 opens with the account of the Lord Jesus Christ showing mercy upon this poor man. Are we like this poor man, lying helpless by our own Pool of Bethesda, waiting to be healed?

Jesus Heals - Verses 10-16

In John 5, Jesus heals a man who has b een sick for 38 years. Imagine the joy this man felt? The Jewish leaders, however, were not happy, for Jesus healed this man on the Sabbath!

Father Loves the Son - Verses 17-20

The Father loves the Son. The Jews, in their rejection of Christ, did not understand that the very God they professed to love had sent Jesus to them.

Son of God - Verses 20-24

How important is it that we believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God? Only through the Lord Jesus Christ can we pass from death to life.

Last Judgment - Verses 25-29

The last judgment. Is it real? Jesus spoke about this very thing in this chapter, telling us that He, as the Son of God and the Son of Man, has been given authority to execute judgment by God the Father. How, then, shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?

Who is Jesus? - Verses 30-36

Who is Jesus? Jesus is the Lord of Glory, the Son of God, the Son of Man, and the Messiah. Jesus came to do more than just the miracles the Jews witnessed.

Search the Scriptures - Verses 37-47

Jesus said, search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, and they testify of me. What did Jesus mean?
