John 16

In John 16, the Lord Jesus Christ continues His dialogue with His disciples, promising that though He would be leaving them, when the Comforter has come, He will guide, encourage, and instruct the disciples. This promise that Jesus made to the disciples is also a promise He has made to us as well. All believers in the Lord Jesus Christ can receive great comfort from these words. What an amazing Savior we serve!

4. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

 5. But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

 6. But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

 7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

John 16:4-7, King James Version

Bible Studies from John 16

Longing for Jesus - verses 1-6

Is it possible to miss someone while they are still with you? I would have never believed it possible until my oldest daughter reached her senior year in high school. For that whole year I already missed her, knowing that once she left for college she may never be back to stay, and in the end, that is exactly what happened!

Comforter Has Come - verses 7-11

The Comforter has come, and He is still here! We, as Christians, often take this for granted. What does the Comforter do?

Limits - verses 12-15

Jesus could not tell the disciples everything, because they were still too resistant to what He was already saying. But, in sending the Holy Spirit to them, He knew He could continue to instruct them all the days of their lives.

A Little While - verses 16-22

Jesus' words were somewhat confusing. A little while, and ye shall not see me. It was not always easy for the disciples to understand what Jesus was really telling them.

Ask and Receive - verses 23-24

As we continue our devotionals from the 16th chapter of John, we come to some very interesting verses. Jesus said, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you.

Show You Plainly - verses 25-28

Have you ever been unsure of the meaning of certain Bible passages? Yes, of course! We all have. It is this struggling with Bible meanings and interpretations which has fractured the Christian community into so many pieces. The disciples experienced the same thing!

I Have Overcome - verses 29-33

Jesus said, I have overcome the world. I know that this is not really the end of this dialogue between Jesus and the disciples, but it is a great way to end John 16, is it not?
