Gift of Youth
by David L. Croft
The Gift of Youth is a song which is meant to be a small wedge against the world's folly and misguiding voice, directing us to find our purpose and meaning in God alone.
They say that youth's a raging river
Wasted on the restless young
A conversation unengaging
Empty stories sweetly sung
They say the heart of youth's a fire
Wild unbroken and untamed
A brilliant undirected spire
Arrows fired without aim
They say many things in life
But words don't make them true
A better voice, a better word
Is calling out to you
To tell you, your life
Is more than a river
Left handed by fate
And abandoned by love
Well, youth is a gift
That flows from one Giver
So surrender yourself
To the Author above
They say that youth's a senseless journey
Vainly ended as begun
An impudent contempt of learning
Bows untempered and unstrung
They say that youth's rebellion's haven,
Error's timber, Folly's lair
A silly simple poem graven
On a tablet strong and fair
They say many things in life
But words don't make them true
A better voice, a better word
Is calling out to you
To tell you, your life
Is more than a river
Left handed by fate
And abandoned by love
Well, youth is a gift
That flows from one Giver
So surrender yourself
Here I raise my Ebenezer
Hither by Thy help I’ve come
From youth to age by Thy good pleasure
Safely I’ll arrive at home
They say that youth’s a raging river
Wasted on the restless young
Don’t receive what they deliver
Join God’s great elect unsung
They say many things in life
But words don't make them true
A better voice, a better word
Is calling out to you
To tell you, your life
Is more than a river
Left handed by fate
And abandoned by love
Well, youth is a gift
That flows from one Giver
So surrender yourself
To the Author above
Words can wound or heal it’s purely
In the power of the tongue
So I tell you be discerning
Between the diamonds and the dung
