Promises of Answered Prayer

He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. Psalm 91:15

Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. Isaiah 58:9 Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. Isaiah 65:24

So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Luke 11:9-10

One of the most blessed promises in the Bible is the promise of answered prayer. How effective is a promise? Is something true or will something really happen because someone promises that it will?

In the movie, "Liar, Liar" the main character played by Jim Carey repeatedly breaks his promises made to his son. His son makes a wish that for 24 hours his father will not be able to lie. The wish is granted and Jim Carey is taken through scene after scene where he is forced to tell the truth. It made for a humorous movie, but the lesson taught was truly valuable.

So, we learn that a promise is only as good as the character of the person who makes it. What about promises made to us by God? Our great and wondrous God, who cannot lie, promises us many places in the Bible that He does and will continue to answer our prayers. In Psalm 91:15 and Isaiah 58:9 shown above, God promises that He will be there when we cry for help or deliverance.

One of my favorite verses in the Bible regarding prayer is found in Isaiah 65:24. Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. How awesome is that? God doesn't need our prayers to know when we need help! However, He shows us through our prayers that our help is in Him alone. How hard that is for us to accept; when all else seems to fail, we finally go to God for help.

I don't think my sister will mind if I relate this story. One winter day, after a terrible ice storm, my sister fell and began to slide down an icy hill. She had fractured her back and was hardly able to move. She had just stepped out with no coat on and now found herself unprotected in frigid weather and unable to move without sliding further on down the hill. Getting up was impossible. In the fall her glasses flew off leaving only a blur around her.

She lay there and prayed to God for help to find her glasses. Upon opening her eyes, there they were right in front of her. Then she asked God to help her get up; about that time her dog, Polo, a St. Bernard/Shepherd mix came running up. Polo grabbed her sweatshirt in his mouth and pulled her up the hill until the ground was level enough for her to get up.

For three weeks she said the pain was so great she could do nothing but lie still and pray. Looking back, she told me that this has been one of the most wonderful experiences of her life. God has not only strengthened her faith, but several other blessings have come out of the experience as well.

The promise of answered prayer is real; God does answer the prayers of His people. Many times the answers are not even close to what we expected; but God has an eternal view in mind.
